Oxford
Landmarks Rally - Sunday, 13th July 2003
This
year will see the Oxford Landmarks Rally running for the tenth time.
I find it hard to believe that the first one was run way back in
1992 with only one year off because of "foot and mouth".
The start will coincide with the Club's National Rally & AGM
at Eynsham Hall. Competitors can attend the AGM in the morning,
look at the cars on display and the trade stands and then compete
on the rally in the afternoon without having to visit Oxfordshire
twice. Note that it is not requirement of the rally to attend the
AGM, you can just turn up at lunchtime to take part. The finish
will be at a pub where you can get an evening meal before heading
home.
As
always this rally is aimed at those club members (please
note: this rally is only open to Lancia Motor Club members) who
want to do something a little more competitive in their Lancias
than the usual Treasure Hunts and Touring Assemblies but have been
frightened off by the perception that they need a specially prepared
rally car. Nowadays road rallying is not like that and this event,
which is run entirely on public tarmac roads, is being set with
novices driving standard road cars in mind. Of course if you want
to bring along your Group 4 Stratos you will be more than welcome!
The rally will be using the same kind of simple navigation which
is used on historic road rallies; if you would like to know what
to expect, I suggest you visit the Historic Rally Car Register web-site:
www.historicroadrally.co.uk.
The
Oxford Landmarks Rally is a competitive Twelve Car Navigational
Rally around a 70 mile route. The first car will be away at 2.00pm
and, using an average speed of 30mph, the event should be all over
by 5.00pm. It would be very nice if everyone took part in a Lancia
but that is not essential. You will however need to be in teams
of two, a driver and a navigator (one of which must be a LMC member)
and will require the latest Ordnance Survey map of Oxford (Landranger
Series Sheet 164 Edition D... the one with the "green"
roads), a good supply of pencils and a rubber!
Only twelve cars are allowed to take part so the sooner you apply
the more likely you are to gain an entry. Furthermore, if you would
like to take part but can't find a partner, I may be able to match
you up with other competitors and, if not, I shall need plenty of
marshals to man time controls.
